Nepal has commenced mass burials for the deceased following last week's catastrophic flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border, with the death toll exceeding 900. As authorities grapple with the scale of the disaster, more than 4,000 individuals remain unaccounted for, including numerous hydropower plant workers across the remote Himalayan region.

The Nepal-Tibet border region experienced a devastating tsunami-like flood, which swept away villages and left thousands missing. Distraught families have flooded rescue stations and hospitals in a desperate search for their loved ones, while others have been confronted with the heart-wrenching task of identifying bodies in overflowing morgues.

The Nepal disaster agency reported that as of Monday, 903 deaths had been confirmed, with 4,247 individuals still reported missing, including 592 foreigners. Among those unaccounted for are 933 hydropower plant workers. In neighboring China, authorities reported 16 deaths and 546 missing, with 261 of the missing being foreigners, over a hundred of whom are Nepalis.

Rescue efforts have been hindered by overnight rain and rising river waters, which filled excavation areas before conditions improved. The Nepal army has intensified search and rescue operations, working to locate stranded people in hills, settlements, and river areas.

The flash floods began on Wednesday, triggered by a glacial collapse high in the Himalayan region. Scientists analyzing satellite images found that bedrock underneath a glacier in the Himalayas had collapsed, taking part of the glacier with it. The resulting rockfall was so extreme that it registered as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event, causing rocks and melted water to swell the rivers below, leading to the torrential flood.

The floodwaters caused the formation of massive lakes held back by mud and debris, posing risks to emergency workers. Overwhelmed by the number of bodies and lacking proper freezing facilities, Nepali authorities have had to begin burials before completing the identification process. DNA samples were taken from the bodies to enable families to identify their loved ones later and perform traditional funeral rites.

As relatives gathered at identification centers, they watched LED screens displaying images of retrieved bodies, often overwhelmed by the grim task. Shobha Adhikary, a local resident, expressed her belief that one image showed her childhood best friend, sharing a photograph of a smiling, middle-aged man.

The Nepal army, along with engineers, drilled through debris towards workers believed to be trapped in a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydroelectric site in the Himalayan river valley. Workers who were able to escape described the horrifying scenes that unfolded during the disaster, with raging water swamping the Upper Trishuli-1 site, where many were caught unprepared.

In northern Nepal, the population lives under constant fear of fresh flooding, adding to the already overwhelming challenges faced by rescue workers and authorities. The international community has been called upon to provide assistance, as the scale of the disaster continues to unfold. As the death toll rises, the Nepali people and their neighbors in China are united in their search for the missing and their efforts to recover from this devastating natural calamity.
