Massive Ferry Fire Off Philippine Coast Leaves at Least Five Dead and 87 Missing

A major maritime disaster unfolded off the southwestern coast of the Philippines after a passenger vessel was engulfed in flames, leaving at least five people dead and dozens more unaccounted for in open waters. Philippine maritime authorities confirmed Thursday that emergency personnel were conducting intensive search and rescue operations off the island province of Palawan, where the vessel caught fire with over a hundred people on board.

The disaster involved the passenger vessel M/V June Aster, which had been traveling on an inter-island maritime route after departing from the capital city of Manila. According to vessel tracking data provided by MarineTraffic, the ferry had navigated southward across Philippine waters before encountering catastrophic conditions just a short distance from the coast of Palawan.

Emergency responders reported that the blaze erupted on Wednesday evening while the vessel was positioned roughly 2.2 kilometers (about 1.3 miles) offshore from Palawan. The proximity to land allowed coast guard teams to deploy rapidly to the scene, though the rapid spread and extreme intensity of the inferno complicated immediate evacuation efforts.

By Thursday morning, rescue teams had pulled 42 survivors from the sea and brought five bodies ashore. Severe concerns remain for the large portion of passengers and crew who have not yet been located, as official manifests indicate the ship was carrying far more people than the number confirmed safe or recovered.

Philippine Coast Guard Captain Noemi Cayabyab detailed the scope of the crisis during an interview with a local radio station, explaining that the vessel’s official manifest listed a total of 134 passengers and crew members. Based on the 42 individuals saved and the five confirmed fatalities, authorities calculated that 87 people remained unaccounted for in the surrounding waters.

Captain Cayabyab emphasized that the reported figures represent live operational data that could change as active search and rescue operations proceed. The coast guard underscored that casualty and survivor tallies often fluctuate during complex maritime incidents while rescue teams verify names against physical rosters and continuing recoveries.

Among the 42 people rescued from the incident, maritime officials confirmed that 38 were passengers and four were members of the ship’s operating crew. Responders prioritized providing urgent medical care, shelter, and emergency support to the survivors, many of whom endured severe trauma while escaping the burning vessel.

Due to the urgent medical triage and support required in the immediate aftermath, coast guard investigators have not yet conducted formal interviews with the survivors. Captain Cayabyab noted that official debriefs regarding how the fire started and spread across the decks will take place once the rescued individuals are stabilized and able to speak with authorities.

Video footage shared by the Philippine Coast Guard on its official Facebook page showed the catastrophic scale of the disaster, with the M/V June Aster completely engulfed in heavy flames and dark smoke. The raging fire consumed significant portions of the vessel's structure, preventing rescue teams from immediately boarding the burning hull.

Specialized maritime response crews have continued their dangerous efforts to suppress the lingering blaze offshore. Extinguishing a fully involved vessel fire at sea presents major logistical hurdles, requiring specialized water pumps and support craft to douse the flames while preventing the ship from sinking or drifting unpredictably.

The disaster occurred off the coast of Palawan, a globally recognized tourist hotspot renowned for its marine biodiversity and island destinations. Across the Philippine archipelago, inter-island ferries represent an indispensable mode of transportation, connecting major ports such as Manila to regional destinations and remote coastal communities.

Maritime safety oversight and emergency response readiness are under heightened focus as authorities work to determine how the fire ignited. A thorough technical inquiry into the vessel's compliance with safety regulations, emergency gear readiness, and onboard fire control mechanisms is expected to follow the rescue phase.

Search and rescue units, supported by coast guard craft and local maritime assets, continue to scan the waters surrounding Palawan. Responders are working against critical time limitations, as sea currents and changing weather can quickly disperse survivors or wreckage away from the initial site of the blaze.

The Philippine Coast Guard reiterated that all available operational resources remain dedicated to finding the 87 missing individuals. Authorities stated that formal investigative proceedings into the cause of the disaster will fully commence once the active search ends and the vessel can be safely inspected.
