### Nepal's Rescue Efforts Intensify as Teams Search for Trapped Workers in Flood-Impacted Hydropower Tunnels

In the aftermath of the catastrophic floods that swept through the Himalayan region last week, Nepal's rescue teams are facing a daunting task as they work tirelessly to locate and free hundreds of workers believed to be trapped in hydropower tunnels. Supported by experts from China and India, these efforts are focused on the two hardest-hit districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot, where the devastating flood, caused by a glacier collapse, has left a trail of destruction.

The unprecedented deluge of ice, rock, mud, and debris along the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of over 900 people and left nearly 5,000 missing. The body count continues to rise as hundreds of unidentified victims are buried in shallow graves in the plains of the Himalayan country. The sheer scale of the disaster has prompted international concern, with the Red Cross estimating that more than 90,000 people have been affected.

As the focus shifts to the 933 workers believed to be trapped at 11 hydropower projects, including many in tunnels, the rescue teams are employing a range of techniques to reach the trapped individuals. Earth-moving equipment is being used to dig through mud and rocks, while soldiers are using torchlight to search for entry points into the dark tunnels. The Nepal army has confirmed that search-and-rescue teams have recovered three bodies from two tunnels, with other sections still buried and under search.

The Nepal army spokesperson, Raja Ram Basnet, told Reuters that the challenge lies in the large amount of debris deposited, which is making it difficult to open the tunnels. Despite these challenges, the primary focus remains on opening the tunnels to reach the trapped workers.

Nepali authorities have reported that 903 people have died, with 4,247 missing, including the 933 workers at hydropower plants. On the Chinese side, authorities have reported 16 deaths and 546 missing in Gyirong County. The disaster has been linked to the effects of climate change, and the international community has offered support to Nepal in its time of need.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah has described the flood as an "unprecedented and devastating natural disaster" and expressed determination to save the lives of citizens. "Despite the adverse weather, difficult terrain, and continuing risks, we are moving forward with determination to save the lives of our citizens," he said in a Facebook post.

China has played a significant role in the relief efforts, with President Xi Jinping visiting Kyrgyzstan and stating that Beijing is making every effort to search for missing people. China has mobilized more than 2,100 rescue workers and allocated at least 220 million yuan ($33 million) to support relief efforts. Airdrops of equipment and supplies have been conducted, and soldiers have used life-detection equipment to search for the missing.

While Nepal has generally declined foreign help in rescue and search operations, it has relied on India and China for their expertise in tunnel rescue. The suspension of rescue operations several times due to bad weather and concerns about potential fresh flooding has added to the complexity of the situation.

As authorities monitor the impact crater carved out near the site of the glacier collapse, the Nepalese government is working to compile a complete assessment of the damage. The disaster has highlighted the vulnerability of the region to natural calamities and the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of such challenges.
