Disputed Claims Over Ground Zero Rescue Resurface as Trump Clashes with Media Over 9/11 Record

As the United States approaches the twenty-fifth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Donald Trump has once again engaged in a public dispute with the press over his personal whereabouts and actions during that historic tragedy. The renewed debate follows recent assertions by the former president describing a dramatic personal rescue near the scene of the catastrophe, a narrative that has drawn immediate skepticism from journalists, historians, and former officials.

Speaking about his memories of the disaster, Trump asserted this week that two municipal firefighters came to his rescue near the US Steel Building in Lower Manhattan immediately following the attacks. He described a chaotic scene in which emergency workers intervened to move him out of harm's way, stating that those on the street believed debris was about to crash down on top of them.

Trump provided vivid details of the alleged encounter, stating that he would never forget the two emergency responders who came to his aid. According to his recollection, the firefighters seized him firmly beneath his arms, physically lifted his body into the air, and ran with him to safety to escape the perceived danger of impending structural collapse.

The vivid account quickly attracted widespread media scrutiny, with New York Magazine among the primary publications raising serious doubts about the plausibility and factual accuracy of his retelling. The reporting underscored persistent inconsistencies between Trump's public recollections and the documented timeline of the September 11 attacks, prompting an aggressive reaction from the former president.

Responding to the press skepticism on his Truth Social platform, Trump attacked the media coverage and sought to adjust the timeline of his story. In his online clarification, he acknowledged that he had not been present at the World Trade Center site on the actual day the Twin Towers collapsed, maintaining instead that the incident involving the firefighters occurred shortly thereafter.

This shifting explanation is not the first time Trump has altered key details surrounding the alleged rescue. Fact-checkers noted that during a January 2016 campaign appearance in New Hampshire, he recounted a nearly identical story about being carried by first responders, yet on that occasion, he explicitly told the audience that the rescue occurred a couple of days after the September 11 attacks took place.

The veracity of Trump’s presence near Ground Zero in the immediate wake of the disaster has long faced substantial rebuttal from witnesses and investigative reporters. CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale, who extensively reviewed statements from Trump's political career, underscored that the real estate developer was actually at his Midtown residence in Trump Tower during the attacks, situated miles away from Lower Manhattan.

This location was further corroborated by a former executive from the Trump Organization, who recounted the morning of the disaster in an interview with Politico in 2016. The former executive confirmed that Trump remained in his private office at Trump Tower as the tragedy unfolded, noting that both of them watched the devastating events take place looking out through the office windows.

Trump’s historical commentary regarding his role in the aftermath of the attacks extends well beyond the rescue anecdote. Just two days after the Twin Towers fell, Trump stated to members of the media that he had dispatched hundreds of his own workers down to Ground Zero to assist with the ongoing search and rescue efforts, adding that he intended to send even more personnel to the scene.

However, that claim has also faced direct contradiction from senior emergency personnel who led the disaster response. In a 2019 interview with The New York Times, a New York Fire Department chief who spent months working amidst the wreckage at Ground Zero stated on the record that he had never witnessed Trump at the disaster site during that extensive recovery period.

While some separate news archives from the period did document Trump visiting the Lower Manhattan site in the days following the catastrophe, independent investigators have noted that the true extent, nature, and substance of his involvement in the formal disaster relief operation remain entirely unsubstantiated by official records.

The ongoing controversy also brings renewed attention to previous statements made by Trump during his 2015 presidential campaign. At that time, Trump claimed that he had personally witnessed people leaping to their deaths from the burning World Trade Center towers, a visual claim that observers pointed out was virtually impossible given that Trump Tower sits approximately four miles north of the disaster zone.

During that same 2015 campaign cycle, Trump generated intense controversy by alleging that he had seen thousands of Muslim Americans in New Jersey actively cheering and celebrating as the Twin Towers fell. That assertion was swiftly and decisively refuted by New Jersey authorities, who carried out reviews and found no corroborating evidence of mass public celebrations, subsequently condemning the allegation as both baseless and Islamophobic.

An extensive fact-checking review by France 24's "Truth or Fake" program, presented by journalist Vedika Bahl, highlighted that Trump's evolving accounts form part of a broader, decades-long pattern of embellishing his proximity to the nation’s deadliest terrorist attack. As the milestone anniversary nears, the discrepancies between documented history and personal political mythmaking continue to generate intense public debate.
