Algeria Severs Diplomatic Relations With the United Arab Emirates Over Accusations of Hostile Actions

Algeria has officially broken off all diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates, announcing an immediate end to formal relations between the two nations following months of sharp geopolitical disputes and public grievances. The decision, broadcast by Algerian state media on Thursday, marks an unprecedented low point in bilateral engagement between the North African nation and the wealthy Gulf state.

According to state media reports, the Algerian leadership resolved to sever ties after reaching what it characterized as the absolute exhaustion of all available avenues to salvage and maintain normal diplomatic relations. Authorities in Algiers specifically pointed to persistent and hostile maneuvers by the United Arab Emirates, framing the complete diplomatic rupture as the unavoidable consequence of ongoing provocations directed against Algerian interests.

In conjunction with the formal announcement, the Algerian government issued a strict ultimatum to the Emirati diplomatic corps stationed in the capital. The UAE ambassador to Algeria was given an official 48-hour window to comply with the directive and depart the country, signaling an abrupt and definitive closure of standard diplomatic channels between the two capitals.

Efforts to obtain immediate clarification or comment from the Emirati side were unsuccessful, as the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to inquiries seeking a response to Algiers’ dramatic decree. The silence from Abu Dhabi followed months of mounting, albeit largely one-sided, public rebukes originating from the highest echelons of Algerian political power.

The formal collapse of ties represents the culmination of deep-seated friction fueled by allegations of foreign interference. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has repeatedly and openly accused the United Arab Emirates of attempting to meddle in Algeria’s domestic affairs, arguing that Abu Dhabi has been actively working behind the scenes to destabilize regional dynamics and compromise national sovereignty.

Throughout the past year, Algerian state-aligned news outlets have echoed these accusations, publishing extensive criticism of Emirati foreign policy. Media commentators in Algiers have consistently alleged that the Gulf state engages in covert operations designed to stir up discord across North Africa and the broader region, thereby undermining regional stability and mutual trust.

Warning signs of a complete diplomatic collapse had become increasingly apparent earlier this year. In February, bilateral ties suffered a significant operational blow when the Algerian government initiated legal steps to cancel a long-standing bilateral air services agreement with the UAE, an accord that had initially been signed in Abu Dhabi back in May 2013 to govern civil aviation and flight connectivity between the two countries.

The revocation of that decade-old aviation treaty signaled a deliberate rollback of functional cooperation, paving the way for further punitive political measures. Bilateral tensions continued to simmer in the following months, accompanied by increasingly combative rhetoric from Algerian leadership concerning the Gulf nation’s growing footprint and regional activities.

President Tebboune has frequently adopted a dismissive and antagonistic tone when referring to the United Arab Emirates during public speeches, frequently characterizing the nation as a "micro-state" or "statelet." In these public addresses, he contended that the Gulf country punches above its weight in an aggressive manner, deliberately pursuing foreign policies that destabilize multiple sovereign states across the Middle East and Africa.

The ideological confrontation reached a peak during a widely followed televised interview in July, in which President Tebboune delivered an exceptionally sharp denunciation of Emirati regional interventions. During the broadcast, the Algerian leader bluntly stated that wherever Emirati officials establish a presence, violence inevitably follows, asserting that the Gulf state’s foreign ventures have consistently generated deeply negative consequences.

Tebboune underscored during the same interview that Algeria’s overriding priority was to safeguard its own domestic peace and territorial integrity from outside disruptions. He made it clear that Algiers wanted the UAE to keep its distance entirely, framing the isolation of Emirati influence as a necessary protective measure to prevent internal bloodshed and social fracture.

Furthermore, the Algerian president disclosed in July that the severance of diplomatic relations had been considered an inevitability for a considerable period. He explained that his administration had deliberately refrained from taking the final step sooner only because Algiers was actively attempting to prevent the deepening of existing political fragmentation and divisions across the wider Arab world.

However, Algerian officials ultimately concluded that preserving a facade of unity was no longer viable in the face of what they perceived as sustained hostility. The decision to finalize the rupture demonstrates that Algiers now views the rift as entirely irreconcilable, prioritizing a definitive political break over pan-Arab diplomatic solidarity.

With the expiration of the 48-hour expulsion window facing the Emirati ambassador, the bilateral relationship has officially entered an era of total estrangement, closing the chapter on formal diplomacy between Algiers and Abu Dhabi for the foreseeable future.
